How Many Appetizers Per Person? Party Food Chart

Hosting a Christmas party, an open house or a New Year's Eve night with only snacks? Here's how many appetizer pieces to plan per guest, a chart for 10 to 50 guests, and how much cheese, dip and drinks to buy.

The rule of thumb

A "piece" is one bite: a meatball, a stuffed mushroom, a cracker with cheese, one shrimp or one mini quiche. Count kids as about half. Teens and big eaters count as one and a half.

Variety: how many kinds to make

Guests Kinds of appetizers
10 or fewer 4 to 5
11 to 25 6 to 8
26 to 50 8 to 10

More kinds means you make less of each. With 8 kinds and 12 pieces per guest, each dish only needs about 1.5 pieces per person. Mix them up: about half hearty (meatballs, sliders, wings, shrimp, deviled eggs), a quarter light (veggies, fruit) and a quarter cheese, dips and crackers. Add one or two sweets if there's no dessert.

Appetizers by guest count

Guests Before dinner (5 each) Appetizer-only party (12 each)
10 50 pieces 120 pieces
15 75 180
20 100 240
25 125 300
30 150 360
40 200 480
50 250 600

Cheese, dips and other per-person amounts

Item Before dinner Appetizer-only party
Cheese 1 oz 2 to 3 oz
Cured meat (salami, prosciutto) 1 oz 2 oz
Dip or spread 2 tablespoons 1/4 cup
Crackers or bread 3 to 4 6 to 8
Raw veggies 1/4 cup 1/2 cup
Shrimp (large) 2 4 to 5
Meatballs 2 4

A 1 lb shrimp ring (about 26 to 30 large shrimp) covers about 6 guests at an appetizer-only party. See how much shrimp per person for a chart by guest count and bag size.

Drinks per person

Example: a 20-guest New Year's Eve party, 8 PM to 12:30 AM

It's appetizers only for about 4.5 hours, so plan around 14 pieces each, about 280 pieces in total. Make 8 kinds, about 35 pieces each. For example: 40 meatballs, 40 shrimp, 30 sliders, 30 stuffed mushrooms, 30 pigs in a blanket, a veggie tray, and a board with 3 lb of cheese, 2 lb of salami and 3 boxes of crackers. Put out one sweet tray around 11 PM. For drinks, plan about 6 bottles of wine, 3 bottles of sparkling wine for midnight, plus soda, water and about 30 lb of ice.

Tips so the food lasts all night

  1. Don't put it all out at once. Hold back about a third and refill around halfway through.
  2. Put out a small plate stack. Smaller plates mean smaller helpings.
  3. Make-ahead first. Cheese boards, dips, meatballs in a slow cooker and cold shrimp free you up to see your guests.
  4. Food safety: don't leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold, or set out smaller trays and swap them.

FAQ

How many appetizers for 50 guests? About 250 pieces before a dinner, or about 600 for an appetizer-only party, across 8 to 10 kinds.

How many appetizers per person for a 2-hour party? About 6 to 8 pieces each if no meal follows.

How much cheese per person for a cheese board? About 1 oz as a starter, or 2 to 3 oz if the board is a main part of the food. If the board is the whole meal, plan 5 to 6 oz; see how much cheese for a charcuterie board for a chart by guest count.

Plan the rest of the party

Label the trays: the Christmas Food Labels printable ($3) has fold-over dish cards with diet and allergy tick boxes. Labels help guests choose, but they don't guarantee a dish is allergen-free.

Set the New Year's table: the New Year's Eve Place Cards & Table Set ($3) has name cards, food labels and a menu card. The New Year's Eve Party Planner 2026 ($4) holds the guest list, menu and shopping list. Hosting a Christmas party? The Christmas Place Cards & Table Set ($3) does the same in red and green.
