15 New Year's Eve Games for the Whole Family

By Cedar & Ledger

New Year's Eve at home is cheaper than a night out, and a few games keep everyone awake until the countdown. Below are 15 easy games for mixed ages, sorted by when they work best, plus an example plan for a 7 PM to midnight evening. Most need only paper, pens and a phone timer.

Early evening (calm games)

  1. Year in review trivia: each person writes 3 questions about things your family did this year ("Where did we go in July?"). Read them aloud and keep score.
  2. Two truths and a resolution: say two true things about your year and one goal for next year. Others guess which is the goal.
  3. Prediction cards: everyone writes predictions for next year, seals them in an envelope and opens it next New Year's Eve.
  4. Memory jar draw: write favorite moments of the year on slips, draw one at a time and guess who wrote it.
  5. Draw and guess: take turns drawing a moment from the year while others guess (any paper and marker works).

Mid-evening (active games)

  1. Balloon countdown: put a small note in each of 5 balloons (a joke, a dare, a dance move) and pop one every hour.
  2. Freeze dance: play music and pause it; anyone still moving is out for one round.
  3. Hat-making contest: paper, tape and markers; vote on the best party hat.
  4. Charades, year edition: act out things that happened this year.
  5. Minute-to-win-it cups: stack 10 plastic cups into a pyramid and back down in under 60 seconds.

Close to midnight

  1. Guess the time: everyone writes when they think the youngest guest will fall asleep. Closest wins.
  2. Resolution roulette: put silly goals in a bowl ("learn a magic trick") and each person draws one to try in January.
  3. Toast round: each person gives a 15-second toast with sparkling juice.
  4. Noise-maker countdown: shout the last 10 seconds together with pots, pans or homemade shakers.
  5. Time capsule: add the prediction cards, a photo and a drawing to a box to open next year.
