How Much Wine Per Person? Bottles Per Guest Chart
Buying wine for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, Nov 26, 2026, Christmas dinner on Friday, Dec 25, or a New Year's Eve party on Thursday, Dec 31? Here's how many glasses are in a bottle, how many bottles to buy for 4 to 24 guests, and how much sparkling wine you need for a midnight toast.
The quick answer
A standard 750 ml bottle holds about 25 oz, which is about 5 glasses at a standard 5 oz pour.
- Sit-down dinner: plan about half a bottle per adult who drinks wine, which is 2 to 3 glasses over the meal.
- Evening party (about 3 hours), wine as the main drink: plan about 4 glasses per wine drinker, a little under 1 bottle each.
- Midnight toast only: a bottle of sparkling wine pours about 6 to 8 toast-size glasses, so plan 1 bottle for every 6 to 8 guests.
Count only the adults who will drink wine. If you're also serving beer, cocktails or a punch, you can buy less wine.
Wine chart by guests
| Wine drinkers | Dinner (1/2 bottle each) | Party, about 3 hours (4 glasses each) | Midnight toast (sparkling) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 bottles | 4 bottles | 1 bottle |
| 6 | 3 bottles | 5 bottles | 1 bottle |
| 8 | 4 bottles | 7 bottles | 1 to 2 bottles |
| 10 | 5 bottles | 8 bottles | 2 bottles |
| 12 | 6 bottles | 10 bottles | 2 bottles |
| 16 | 8 bottles | 13 bottles | 2 to 3 bottles |
| 20 | 10 bottles | 16 bottles | 3 bottles |
| 24 | 12 bottles (1 case) | 20 bottles | 3 to 4 bottles |
Bottles are 750 ml, rounded up. A case is 12 bottles. Buying one extra bottle is a cheap way to avoid running out, and an unopened bottle keeps for the next holiday.
Bigger sizes, in bottles
- Magnum (1.5 L): the same as 2 standard bottles, about 10 glasses.
- Box wine (3 L): the same as 4 standard bottles, about 20 glasses. Handy for a big party.
- Half bottle (375 ml): about 2 1/2 glasses.
Red, white or sparkling?
There's no fixed rule. For a mixed crowd, a simple start is about half red and half white, then adjust for what your family actually drinks. For a turkey or ham dinner, many hosts pick one light red and one crisp white so guests can choose. For New Year's Eve, add sparkling wine for the toast on top of the wine you serve during the night.
If you're not sure, ask guests when they RSVP, or ask one or two of them to bring a bottle of what they like.
Pour size matters
The chart assumes a standard 5 oz glass. Large wine glasses make it easy to pour 7 or 8 oz without noticing, and then a bottle only fills 3 or 4 glasses. If you're pouring for guests, fill glasses about a third of the way. Toast pours of sparkling wine are smaller, about 3 to 4 oz.
Storing opened wine
- Still wine: recork it and keep it in the fridge. Most opened red and white wine tastes fine for about 3 to 5 days.
- Sparkling wine: use a sparkling wine stopper and refrigerate. It keeps its bubbles for about 1 to 3 days.
- Unopened bottles: store them on their side in a cool, dark place.
- Chill whites and sparkling in the fridge for about 3 hours before guests arrive, or in a bucket of ice and water for about 30 minutes.
Example: Christmas dinner for 10 adults
8 of the 10 adults drink wine, and dinner runs about 3 hours.
- 8 × 1/2 bottle = 4 bottles, plus 1 spare = 5 bottles (2 red, 2 white, 1 spare red).
- Chill the whites by 2 PM for a 5 PM dinner.
- Put out water and a non-alcoholic option (sparkling cider or soda) so everyone has something in their glass for the toast.
Example: New Year's Eve party for 12
The party runs from 9 PM to 12:30 AM, and 10 guests drink wine.
- 10 × 4 glasses = 40 glasses, about 8 bottles of still wine.
- Toast at midnight: 12 guests at 6 to 8 per bottle = 2 bottles of sparkling wine, plus 1 bottle of sparkling cider for anyone not drinking.

Drink responsibly
- Never serve alcohol to anyone under 21 or anyone who's driving.
- Always offer water and at least one non-alcoholic drink, and keep food out the whole time.
- Stop pouring for guests who have had enough, and help arrange a ride or a couch if someone shouldn't drive.
- Quantities here are for planning how much to buy, not a suggestion of how much anyone should drink.
FAQ
How many glasses of wine are in a bottle? About 5 at a standard 5 oz pour.
How many bottles of wine for 50 guests? For a dinner where about 40 adults drink wine, about 20 bottles. For a 3-hour party where wine is the main drink, about 32 to 40 bottles.
How many bottles of champagne for a toast? About 1 bottle for every 6 to 8 guests.
Is half a bottle per person too much? It's a buying rule, not a drinking target. Many guests drink less, and unopened bottles keep, so it's better to have a little left over than run out.
