How Many Dinner Rolls Per Person? Holiday Chart
Rolls are the cheapest thing on the holiday table, and the one hosts most often run out of or end up with three extra bags of. Here's how many to plan per guest, a chart for 4 to 24 guests with how many 12-count packs to buy, and when to bake or buy them for Thursday, Nov 26, 2026 or Friday, Dec 25, 2026.
The quick answer
Plan about 1 1/2 dinner rolls per person. Some guests take one, some take two, and it evens out. Plan 2 rolls per person if your family loves bread, if there are teenagers at the table, or if you want rolls for leftover turkey or ham sandwiches the next day. For 12 guests that's 18 rolls as a minimum, or 24 to be safe.
Small kids usually eat about 1 roll, so you can count two young children as one adult guest.
Dinner rolls chart by guests
| Guests | Standard (1 1/2 each) | 12-count packs | Generous (2 each) | 12-count packs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 rolls | 1 pack | 8 rolls | 1 pack |
| 6 | 9 rolls | 1 pack | 12 rolls | 1 pack |
| 8 | 12 rolls | 1 pack | 16 rolls | 2 packs |
| 10 | 15 rolls | 2 packs | 20 rolls | 2 packs |
| 12 | 18 rolls | 2 packs | 24 rolls | 2 packs |
| 16 | 24 rolls | 2 packs | 32 rolls | 3 packs |
| 20 | 30 rolls | 3 packs | 40 rolls | 4 packs |
| 24 | 36 rolls | 3 packs | 48 rolls | 4 packs |
Pack counts assume 12 rolls per pack, rounded up. Package sizes vary a lot (canned crescent dough, bakery dozens, large frozen bags), so check the count on the label and divide. Frozen unbaked rolls are the easiest way to cover a crowd: bake what you need and leave the rest in the freezer.
How rolls fit with the other sides
Rolls compete with the other starches. If you're serving mashed potatoes, stuffing and a sweet potato casserole, most guests take less bread, and 1 1/2 per person is plenty. If the menu is lighter on starches, or it's a buffet where people go back for seconds, plan 2.
For the other sides, see how much mashed potatoes per person, how much stuffing per person and how much gravy per person.
Store-bought, frozen or homemade?
- Bakery or bagged rolls: the least work. Buy them a day or two before and warm them in the oven just before dinner.
- Frozen unbaked rolls: taste fresh-baked, but most need several hours to thaw and rise before baking. Read the package the night before so the timing doesn't surprise you.
- Canned refrigerated dough: bakes in about 15 minutes, so it's a good last-minute option while the turkey rests.
- Homemade: the best rolls on the table, but dough needs oven time. Bake them in the morning or the day before, then reheat.
When to buy or bake, and how to keep them
- Store-bought rolls taste best within 2 to 3 days at room temperature, so buy them Tuesday or Wednesday for Thanksgiving, or Dec 23 or 24 for Christmas.
- Rolls freeze well. Baked rolls wrapped tightly keep about 3 months in the freezer, so you can bake homemade rolls the weekend before (Nov 21-22) and freeze them.
- To warm rolls, wrap them in foil and heat at 350°F for about 10 to 15 minutes (a few minutes longer from frozen). The foil keeps them soft.
- Oven space: the turkey usually rests for 30 to 40 minutes before carving, which is the perfect window to warm or bake the rolls.
Example: 12 guests, dinner at 5 PM
12 × 1 1/2 = 18 rolls, and 12 × 2 = 24 rolls. This family makes turkey sandwiches on Friday, so plan 24 rolls:
- Wednesday, Nov 25: buy 2 packs of 12 bakery rolls (bread and rolls are on the 1-2 days before list in our Thanksgiving grocery list).
- Thursday, 4:15 PM: the turkey comes out to rest. Wrap 18 rolls in foil.
- Thursday, 4:35 PM: warm the rolls at 350°F for about 15 minutes, then put them in a cloth-lined basket with butter on the table.
- After dinner: keep the other 6 in their bag for Friday's sandwiches.

FAQ
Is one roll per person enough? Usually not. Many adults take two, and running out of rolls is more noticeable than having a few left over. Plan at least 1 1/2.
How many rolls for 50 people? About 75 at 1 1/2 each, or 100 if your crowd loves bread. That's 7 to 9 packs of 12.
Can I make rolls the day before? Yes. Bake them, cool them completely, store them in a sealed bag at room temperature, and warm them in foil before dinner.
What if a guest asks what to bring? Rolls are a great answer. Tell them the number ("2 dozen rolls"), not just "bread," so you get enough.
