New Year's Eve Party at Home on a Budget: Checklist
By Cedar & Ledger
New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, the week January bills arrive. A party at home is easy to keep cheap with a short checklist, a set budget and a timeline that counts down to midnight. This page is the checklist; for the budget math, see New Year's Eve Budget.
Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a typical or recommended amount. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Set one total after January bills are covered
- ☐ Pick a format: potluck, appetizers only or dessert and drinks
- ☐ Invite and confirm a headcount
- ☐ Make one shopping list
- ☐ Plan rides home
- ☐ Set a countdown schedule
Step 1: Set the total
Start from what is left after January 1 bills. Example (made-up numbers): $120 for 10 guests is $12 a guest.
Step 2: Pick a cheap format
| Format | Host buys | Example cost |
|---|---|---|
| Potluck | Drinks and paper goods | $40 |
| Appetizers only | 4-5 snacks and drinks | $80 |
| Dessert and drinks, late start | Dessert, sparkling drinks | $50 |
Starting at 9 PM instead of 7 PM means guests have eaten dinner already.
Step 3: The shopping list
Drinks (including alcohol-free ones), ice, snacks, cups and plates, noisemakers or hats if you want them. Check what you already have from the holidays first.
Step 4: Countdown timeline
- Dec 21-23: send invitations, ask about potluck dishes
- Dec 28: confirm headcount and rides home
- Dec 30: shop and chill drinks
- Dec 31, afternoon: set up, make food
- 9 PM: guests arrive
- 11:45 PM: pour drinks, find the countdown
- 12:00 AM: Happy New Year
Step 5: Rides home
Plan sober drivers, a place to stay, or rideshare money before the night. It is the one line not to cut.

How do I keep it cheap without being a bad host? Pick one format, say it in the invite and stick to it.
Do I need party favors? No. Noisemakers are optional; good snacks and a clear countdown matter more.
