How Many Meatballs Per Person? Party Chart for 6 to 50
A slow cooker of meatballs is one of the easiest things to put out at a Christmas party or on New Year's Eve, Thursday, Dec 31, 2026. The hard part is the count: one bag can vanish in twenty minutes, or you end up with three bags of leftovers. Here's how many meatballs to plan per person, a chart for 6 to 50 guests, how many frozen bags that is, and how to keep them hot and safe.
The quick answer
The counts below are for meatballs of about 1 ounce each (about 1 inch across, a common frozen "dinner size").
- One of many appetizers (before a sit-down dinner, or a big spread with lots of other snacks): plan about 2 meatballs per person.
- A featured hot appetizer at a party with only a few other foods: plan 3 to 4 meatballs per person.
- Meatballs are the main dish (over pasta, in subs, or the main thing on a buffet): plan about 6 meatballs per person, which is about 6 ounces.
Using bigger meatballs? Count by weight instead. Six ounces per person as a main dish is three 2-ounce meatballs or two 3-ounce meatballs. Using small 1/2-ounce cocktail meatballs? Double the count; the weight stays the same.
Where these numbers come from: Mortadella Head, a Somerville, MA, Italian deli and caterer, plans 3 one-ounce meatballs per person when meatballs are an appetizer and not the main course, and 6 ounces of meat per person for a main course (6 one-ounce, 3 two-ounce or 2 three-ounce meatballs). Our appetizers per person guide uses 2 meatballs per person before dinner and 4 at an appetizer-only party.
Meatball chart by guests
Counts are for 1-ounce meatballs. Bags are 26-ounce bags of 1-ounce frozen meatballs (about 26 per bag), rounded up.
| Guests | One of many appetizers (2 each) | Featured appetizer (4 each) | Main dish (6 each) | Main dish weight (6 oz each) | 26-oz bags, featured appetizer | 26-oz bags, main dish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 12 | 24 | 36 | 2 1/4 lb | 1 | 2 |
| 8 | 16 | 32 | 48 | 3 lb | 2 | 2 |
| 10 | 20 | 40 | 60 | 3 3/4 lb | 2 | 3 |
| 12 | 24 | 48 | 72 | 4 1/2 lb | 2 | 3 |
| 16 | 32 | 64 | 96 | 6 lb | 3 | 4 |
| 20 | 40 | 80 | 120 | 7 1/2 lb | 4 | 5 |
| 25 | 50 | 100 | 150 | 9 1/2 lb | 4 | 6 |
| 30 | 60 | 120 | 180 | 11 1/4 lb | 5 | 7 |
| 40 | 80 | 160 | 240 | 15 lb | 7 | 10 |
| 50 | 100 | 200 | 300 | 18 3/4 lb | 8 | 12 |
For 50 guests with meatballs as the main dish, that's about 19 lb, in line with Mortadella Head's estimate of 18 to 20 lb of meatballs for 50 people. Count kids as about half. When the bag count is close (for example 100 meatballs from four bags of "about 26"), buy one more bag, since bag counts are approximate.
How many meatballs are in a frozen bag?
Bag counts are printed as "approximately", and they vary by brand and size, so check the label of the bag you buy. One widely sold example, as listed on grocery store product pages in October 2026:
| Bag (Cooked Perfect, fully cooked) | Meatball size | Count on the label |
|---|---|---|
| Dinner Size Italian Style, 26 oz | 1 oz | about 26 |
| Bite Size Italian Style, 13 oz | 1/2 oz | about 26 |
The easy math for any bag: divide the net weight in ounces by the weight of one meatball. A 32-oz bag of 1-ounce meatballs holds about 32; the same bag of 1/2-ounce meatballs holds about 64.
Will it fit in my slow cooker?
- Fill it half to two-thirds full. USDA and FoodSafety.gov say a slow cooker should be between half and two-thirds full. Too full and the food may not heat through; too empty and it overcooks.
- What tested recipes use: Taste of Home's test kitchen uses one 26-oz package of frozen fully cooked meatballs plus about 2 cups of sauce in a 4-quart slow cooker, and a 32-oz package with sauce in a 4-quart cooker for another party recipe (about 5 dozen meatballs).
- Bigger crowd? Use two cookers, or keep half the meatballs in a pot on the stove and refill the slow cooker halfway through the party. A quick dry run helps: put the meatballs and sauce jars next to the empty crock the day before and see whether they'll stay under the two-thirds line.
Keep them hot and safe
- Fully cooked frozen meatballs: heat them the way the package says. Cooked Perfect's directions, for example, are 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes in the oven from frozen, or about 25 minutes covered in simmering sauce on the stove.
- Thaw before the slow cooker. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says to always thaw meat or poultry before putting it in a slow cooker; frozen meat can spend too long thawing in the danger zone. Thaw in the fridge, or heat the meatballs on the stove or in the oven first and then move them to a preheated slow cooker.
- Heat to 165°F, then hold at 140°F or above. FSIS says to reheat cooked food to 165°F, and that a preheated slow cooker can then keep it hot for serving at 140°F or above. Use a food thermometer.
- Making them from scratch? Cook ground beef or pork meatballs to 160°F and chicken or turkey meatballs to 165°F (FoodSafety.gov).
- Two-hour rule. Food that isn't kept hot should be refrigerated within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F). Store leftovers in shallow covered containers. FSIS doesn't recommend reheating leftovers in a slow cooker; reheat them on the stove or in the microwave first.
Example: New Year's Eve for 20 (example numbers)
Thursday, Dec 31, 2026, 8 PM to just past midnight. Meatballs are the one hot dish next to a cheese board, chips and dip, a veggie tray and shrimp cocktail, so plan 3 each.
- Meatballs: 60 one-ounce meatballs, so 3 bags of 26-oz (about 78).
- Slow cooker: one 26-oz bag fits a 4-quart cooker with sauce, so put one bag out at 8 PM (two only if a bigger cooker stays under the two-thirds line) and keep the rest hot on the stove for a 10 PM refill.
- Sauce: about 2 cups per bag, following your recipe.
Example: Christmas party for 12, meatballs as the main (example numbers)
Saturday, Dec 19, 2026. Meatball subs with a salad and chips.
- Meatballs: 72 one-ounce meatballs (6 each), about 4 1/2 lb, so 3 bags of 26-oz.
- Or bigger meatballs: 36 two-ounce meatballs, 3 per sub.
- Cooker: split them between two slow cookers, or simmer them in sauce on the stove and keep one cooker topped up.
