How Much Shrimp Per Person? Shrimp Cocktail Chart
Shrimp cocktail is the appetizer that empties first at Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve parties. Here's how many shrimp to plan per guest, a chart for 4 to 50 guests with pounds to buy, what the numbers on the bag mean, and how to thaw, cook and serve it safely.
The quick answer
- Before a sit-down dinner (Christmas Eve, a holiday meal) with other starters: plan 2 to 3 shrimp per person.
- An appetizer party with several other dishes: plan 4 to 6 shrimp per person.
- Shrimp is the star (or the only real appetizer): plan 8 to 10 shrimp per person, about 1/4 to 1/3 lb of peeled shrimp each.
- Kids: count them as about half.
Plan by pieces, not pounds. The size of the shrimp changes how many come in a pound, so count pieces per guest first, then divide by the count on the bag.
These numbers fit our appetizers per person rule: 4 to 6 total pieces before dinner, 10 to 15 for an appetizer-only party.
Shrimp chart by guests
Pounds are for 26/30 count shrimp (about 28 per pound, a common size for shrimp cocktail), rounded up to the next half pound.
| Guests | Before dinner (3 each) | Appetizer party (5 each) | Shrimp is the star (8 each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 12 shrimp, 1/2 lb | 20 shrimp, 1 lb | 32 shrimp, 1 1/2 lb |
| 6 | 18 shrimp, 1 lb | 30 shrimp, 1 1/2 lb | 48 shrimp, 2 lb |
| 8 | 24 shrimp, 1 lb | 40 shrimp, 1 1/2 lb | 64 shrimp, 2 1/2 lb |
| 10 | 30 shrimp, 1 1/2 lb | 50 shrimp, 2 lb | 80 shrimp, 3 lb |
| 12 | 36 shrimp, 1 1/2 lb | 60 shrimp, 2 1/2 lb | 96 shrimp, 3 1/2 lb |
| 16 | 48 shrimp, 2 lb | 80 shrimp, 3 lb | 128 shrimp, 5 lb |
| 20 | 60 shrimp, 2 1/2 lb | 100 shrimp, 4 lb | 160 shrimp, 6 lb |
| 24 | 72 shrimp, 3 lb | 120 shrimp, 4 1/2 lb | 192 shrimp, 7 lb |
| 30 | 90 shrimp, 3 1/2 lb | 150 shrimp, 5 1/2 lb | 240 shrimp, 9 lb |
| 40 | 120 shrimp, 4 1/2 lb | 200 shrimp, 7 1/2 lb | 320 shrimp, 11 1/2 lb |
| 50 | 150 shrimp, 5 1/2 lb | 250 shrimp, 9 lb | 400 shrimp, 14 1/2 lb |
Buying a bigger or smaller size? Divide the shrimp count by the number on the bag (below).
What the numbers on the bag mean
Shrimp are sold by count per pound. A bag marked 21/25 has 21 to 25 shrimp in a pound; a lower number means bigger shrimp. "U/15" means under 15 per pound. Typical names:
| Count per pound | Common name | Shrimp per pound (about) |
|---|---|---|
| U/15 | Colossal | 12 to 15 |
| 16/20 | Extra jumbo | 18 |
| 21/25 | Jumbo | 23 |
| 26/30 | Extra large | 28 |
| 31/35 | Large | 33 |
| 41/50 | Medium | 45 |
Store names aren't standard (one store's "large" is another's "jumbo"), so shop by the count. Bigger shrimp look generous on a platter; with 16/20 shrimp, you can plan one fewer per guest.
A 1 lb shrimp ring (about 26 to 30 shrimp) covers about 6 guests at an appetizer party, or 9 to 10 before dinner.
Cocktail sauce
Plan about 1 to 2 tablespoons of cocktail sauce per guest. A 12 oz jar (about 24 tablespoons) covers roughly 12 to 20 guests. Homemade is easy: ketchup or chili sauce with prepared horseradish and a squeeze of lemon, to taste. Put out lemon wedges too.
Thaw, cook and chill
Most shrimp at the store were frozen, so buying frozen is fine (and lets you shop early).
- Thaw in the fridge overnight. For a faster thaw, FDA says to seal the shrimp in a plastic bag and put it in cold water. Don't thaw on the counter.
- Cooked shrimp rings just need thawing in the fridge, then plating.
- Cooking raw shrimp: bring a pot of salted water to a boil, add the shrimp and cook until they turn pink and the flesh is pearly and opaque (FDA's sign of doneness), about 2 to 3 minutes for 26/30 size. Drain and drop them into ice water, then peel (leave the tails on for dipping) and refrigerate.
- Storage: FoodSafety.gov's cold storage chart lists 3 to 5 days in the fridge for fresh shrimp. Treat cooked shrimp like other leftovers and eat it within 3 to 4 days. Cooking it the day of the party or the day before keeps it at its best.
Serving safely
- Keep it cold: set the shrimp bowl or platter in a larger bowl of ice so it stays at 40°F or colder. Our how much ice for a party guide has the amounts for buffet ice.
- Two-hour rule: don't leave shrimp out more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F). Put out half and refill from the fridge.
- Leftovers: refrigerate promptly and eat within 3 to 4 days.
- Allergies: shrimp is a crustacean shellfish, one of the 9 major food allergens in the US. Some cocktail sauces use Worcestershire sauce, which often contains anchovies (fish). Label the platter and keep serving spoons separate.
Example: Christmas Eve dinner for 8
Thursday, Dec 24, 2026. Shrimp cocktail as a starter, with a cheese board, before the main course: 3 shrimp each = 24 shrimp. Buy 1 lb of 26/30 shrimp and one small jar of cocktail sauce.
- Dec 23, evening: move the frozen shrimp to the fridge to thaw.
- Dec 24, afternoon: cook (if raw), chill in ice water, peel and refrigerate.
- Guests arrive: set the shrimp out over ice with sauce and lemon wedges.
Example: New Year's Eve party for 16
Thursday, Dec 31, 2026, 8 PM to 12:30 AM, appetizers only, with about 8 other dishes. Plan 5 shrimp each = 80 shrimp, about 3 lb of 26/30 shrimp (for example, three 1 lb bags of frozen cooked shrimp) and a 12 oz jar of cocktail sauce. Thaw in the fridge overnight on Dec 30. Put out half at 8 PM over ice and the rest around 10 PM; any shrimp that has been out for 2 hours goes back in the fridge or gets tossed.
FAQ

How much shrimp for 20 people? About 100 shrimp, or 4 lb of 26/30 shrimp, at a party with other appetizers.
Is 1 lb of shrimp enough for 4 people? As an appetizer, yes: a pound of 26/30 shrimp is about 7 each. As a main dish, plan more.

Do I need a template to do this?
No. A notebook or a sheet you build yourself works fine. Cedar & Ledger also sells spreadsheet templates (I'd earn from a purchase); see the template box at the top of this page.
Is this financial advice?
No. It's general information with example numbers only, not financial, tax, legal or medical advice. Use your own numbers and check anything important with a qualified professional or the official source.
