Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Most of the stress of hosting comes from doing everything in the last 48 hours. Spread the work out and the day itself is mostly oven timing and setting the table.
Times below are examples. Adjust them to your menu, your oven and when you want to eat.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Guest count and dietary needs confirmed
- ☐ Menu written down, with who makes what
- ☐ Main dish ordered or bought (and thaw time worked out)
- ☐ Grocery list split into "early" and "last 2 days"
- ☐ Day-of timeline written backward from serving time
4 weeks before (around Nov 27)
- Set the guest count. Ask for RSVPs and any allergies or dietary needs now. The guest count drives almost every other decision.
- Set a budget. Pick one total for food, drinks and extras, then divide by guests to get a cost per person. Our Christmas dinner budget guide walks through it.
- Write the menu. Main, 2 to 4 sides, bread, dessert, drinks. Note which dishes guests are bringing.
- Order anything that sells out. Fresh turkey or ham, a bakery pie, or rentals (chairs, extra plates) are often booked or picked over in the last week.
- Check your gear. Roasting pan, meat thermometer, enough serving dishes and seats. Borrow what's missing now.
2 to 3 weeks before
- Shop the non-perishables. Canned goods, baking supplies, spices, drinks, foil, napkins and to-go containers.
- Plan the oven. List every dish with its oven temperature and time. If two dishes need the oven at the same time at different temperatures, move one to the stovetop, slow cooker or make it the day before.
- Plan the seating. Count chairs and table space against the guest list.
1 week before (around Dec 18)
- Thaw a frozen turkey in the fridge. The USDA guideline is about 24 hours of fridge thawing for every 4 to 5 pounds, so a 16-pound bird needs about 4 days. Work out your start day from your bird's weight.
- Make freezer-friendly dishes. Pie dough, cookie dough, some casseroles and soups can be made now and frozen.
- Clean and clear. Clear fridge space for the main dish and make-ahead sides.
- Confirm guests and who is bringing what.
1 to 2 days before (Dec 23–24)
- Shop the fresh items. Produce, dairy, bread and herbs.
- Prep ahead. Chop vegetables, make cranberry sauce, assemble casseroles to bake later, make dessert.
- Set the table the night before, including serving dishes with a sticky note saying what goes in each.
Day-of timeline (example: dinner at 3:00 PM)
Work backward from when you want to eat. For a 14 to 18 pound unstuffed turkey, cook times are often around 3¾ to 4¼ hours at 325°F, but always go by a thermometer: 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh, breast and stuffing, then rest it about 20 to 30 minutes before carving.
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 10:00 AM | Turkey in the oven (check your bird's weight and recipe) |
| 12:00 PM | Set out drinks and appetizers; finish any last prep |
| 1:30 PM | Start checking the turkey's temperature |
| 2:15 PM | Turkey out to rest; sides into the oven |
| 2:30 PM | Stovetop sides, gravy, warm the bread |
| 3:00 PM | Carve and serve |
| After dinner | Leftovers into the fridge within 2 hours |
Common questions
What's the most common timing mistake? Running out of oven space. Planning each dish's oven time on paper a few weeks out fixes most of it.
How far ahead can I shop? Non-perishables any time. Fresh produce and dairy are best in the last 1 to 2 days.
