Black Friday Budget: Make a Plan Before the Sales (2026)

By Cedar & Ledger

Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals only save money if you were going to buy the thing anyway. This guide shows a short plan you can make before Friday, November 27, 2026: one total, a list with caps, and a rule for deals that are not on the list.

Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a recommendation of what to spend. This is general information, not financial advice.

Quick checklist

Step 1: Pick one total first

Start from cash you have, not from the deals. If Christmas gifts are part of it, the total comes out of your holiday budget, not on top of it. How Much to Spend on Christmas per Child or Person shows how to set that number.

Example (made-up numbers): Holiday total $600. You plan to buy $350 of gifts during the sales, so the Black Friday total is $350 and $250 is left for later.

Step 2: List items with a cap and a normal price

Write the item, who it is for, your cap and the normal price you have seen. Checking the normal price ahead of time tells you whether the "deal" is real.

Example (made-up numbers):

Item For Cap Normal price
Headphones Child 1 $80 $99
Board game Family $30 $40
Boots Partner $90 $120
Kitchen scale Parents $25 $30
Tablet case Child 2 $20 $25
Total $245

That leaves $105 of the $350 for anything you forgot.

Step 3: Set a rule for off-list deals

A simple rule: an item not on the list waits 24 hours, and it has to come out of the leftover amount. If the leftover is gone, it waits until after the holidays.

Step 4: Log purchases as you go

Add each order to your gift list with the actual price, shipping and tax. Many orders across a weekend are easy to lose track of. Christmas Gift List: Track Gifts and Spending shows the four columns to use.

Example (made-up numbers): Headphones $79 + $0 shipping, boots $96 + $6 shipping = $181 paid against caps of $170. You are $11 over, so trim $11 from the leftover $105.

Step 5: Watch return windows

Note the return deadline for each order. Holiday return windows vary by store, so check each one rather than assuming.

Common questions

Should I use a credit card for Black Friday? Only you can decide. If you do, keep the total to cash you already have so the bill can be paid in full.

What if the item I wanted is not on sale? Buy it at the normal price later if it is still in the budget. A sale is not a reason to change the list.

Printing your list? The holiday printables checklist covers the Black Friday list, gift tags and a holiday planner.
