How Much to Spend on Christmas per Child or Person (2026)
By Cedar & Ledger
There is no right number for Christmas. The right amount is what you can pay in cash without shorting January's bills. This guide shows how to work backward from that total to a Christmas budget per child and per person, with example numbers you can swap for your own.
Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a recommendation of what to spend. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Find the total you can spend in cash
- ☐ Take out food, travel, wrapping and extras first
- ☐ Set a per-child amount, then a per-person amount for adults
- ☐ Write each cap down before you shop
- ☐ Track every gift against its cap
Step 1: Find your Christmas total first
Add what you already have saved for the holidays to what you can set aside from each paycheck between now and mid-December.
Example (made-up numbers): $200 already saved + $75 from each of 4 paychecks = $500 total for Christmas.
If January rent or bills would be short after that, lower the total now. How to Plan Holiday Spending and Still Cover January walks through that check.
Step 2: Take out everything that is not a gift
Christmas costs more than presents. Take these off the top:
- Holiday food and hosting
- Travel or gas to see family
- Wrapping, cards and shipping
- Small extras: teacher gifts, office exchange, stocking stuffers
Example (made-up numbers): $500 − $80 food − $40 travel − $25 wrapping and shipping − $35 extras = $320 for gifts.
Step 3: Set a Christmas budget per child
Many families give each child the same amount so it feels fair, even if the gifts differ.
Example (made-up numbers): 2 children at $90 each = $180. That leaves $320 − $180 = $140 for everyone else.
A simple way to keep a per-child amount in check is a short list per child, for example: one bigger gift, one thing they need, one book, one stocking. Price each item before you buy and stop when the cap is reached.
Step 4: Set a budget per person for adults
Split what is left into tiers instead of one flat number.
Example (made-up numbers), $140 for 7 people:
- Partner (1 person): $40
- Parents and siblings (4 people): $20 each = $80
- Friends (2 people): $10 each = $20
- Total: $40 + $80 + $20 = $140
If the tiers do not fit, try a family gift exchange, one gift per household, or homemade gifts for one tier.
Step 5: Track each gift against its cap
Keep one list with the person, the cap, the gift idea and the actual cost. When one gift comes in under its cap, the leftover goes back to the buffer, not to another gift.

Common questions
What is a normal amount to spend per child? It varies widely by family and income. Start from your total in Step 1, not from what others spend.
Should every child get the same amount? Many families keep the dollar amount equal and let the number of gifts vary. Pick whichever rule you can explain to your kids and stick to.
What if I already went over? Stop adding gifts, list what is bought, and see if anything can be returned. Then set a smaller cap for whoever is left.

Many families keep the per-child total predictable with the want, need, wear, read gift rule.
