Giving Tuesday 2026: How to Plan a Donation Budget

By Cedar & Ledger

Giving Tuesday falls on December 1, 2026, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Requests to give come all season. Picking a yearly giving amount ahead of time lets you say yes to causes you care about without guilt or surprise.

All amounts are made-up examples. This is general information, not tax or financial advice. Ask a tax professional about deductions.

Quick checklist

Step 1: Pick one total

Start from what's left after bills, savings and the holiday budget, not from the size of the ask. A percent of take-home pay is one way to set it.

Example (made-up): take-home pay $3,200 a month; holiday giving budget 1% of one month = $32, or $10 a month for the whole year.

Step 2: Choose your causes ahead of time

Pick a few causes and decide the split. When other requests arrive, you can say "this year we've already given" and mean it.

Cause Share Amount
Local food bank 50% $16
Animal shelter 25% $8
Open for a friend's fundraiser 25% $8

Time counts too: volunteering costs nothing but a few hours.

Step 3: Check the charity

Look up the organization on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search or a charity review site. Be careful with urgent texts, unknown callers and links in unexpected emails. Go to the charity's own site instead.

Step 4: Give directly and keep the receipt

Donating on the charity's site usually means fewer middleman fees. Save the email receipt. US donations are only deductible if you itemize, with limited exceptions, so many people won't get a tax break. Give because you want to, not for a deduction.

Step 5: Log it

Write each gift in your budget. Next year you'll know what you gave and whether it fit.

Tools that help

Add a "giving" line to the Christmas Budget & Gift List Planner or the printable Christmas Planner & Budget 2026. For a year-round amount, add it as a category in your 2027 budget.

Common questions

How much should I donate? Any amount you can give while still covering bills and savings is enough. Small amounts help.

Is it better to give monthly or once? Monthly gifts help charities plan; one gift is simpler to budget. Either works.

Can I count volunteering as giving? In your budget, yes. For taxes, your time isn't deductible, though some volunteer expenses can be; ask a tax pro.
