Free Savings Rate Calculator: What Percent You Save

Your savings rate is the share of your income you keep instead of spend. Enter what you bring home and what you save each month to see your rate and what it would take to reach a goal.

It runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. The numbers filled in below are a made-up example; change them to yours.

How the math works

Example (made up): $3,200 take-home, $320 saved from it and $150 a month into a 401(k). That's $470 saved out of $3,350, a 14.0% savings rate. Reaching 20% would take $670 a month, so $200 more.

People measure this differently (some use gross pay, some leave out retirement). Pick one way and stick with it so you can compare month to month. There's no single right rate; any rate you can keep up beats a high one you can't. This is general information, not financial advice.

Find the money to save, one paycheck at a time

The Paycheck Budget Spreadsheet ($7) does this all year: enter your pay schedule and bills, and it shows what each check covers and what's left, with tabs for spending, debt and savings. Works in Excel and Google Sheets.

This template is also in the Complete Household Money Bundle (what's inside): all 13 home money spreadsheets for $29 (about $69 if bought one by one).

We make this template, so take that into account. The calculator above is free to use either way.
