Tax Documents Checklist for Your 2026 Return

By Cedar & Ledger

Most tax forms for 2026 arrive in January and early February 2027. Gathering them in one folder as they come in makes filing faster, whether you file yourself or hand it to a tax preparer.

This is general information, not tax advice. What you need depends on your situation; check IRS.gov or ask a tax professional.

Quick checklist

Step 1: Income forms

Our 1099 forms checklist explains each 1099 in more detail.

Step 2: Forms that may lower your tax

Step 3: Your own records

Not everything comes on a form. If you have a side hustle, you need your own totals for income, business expenses and business miles. Payments from clients who didn't send a 1099 still count as income.

Step 4: Basics

Have Social Security numbers for everyone on the return, your bank routing and account numbers for a direct deposit refund, and last year's return.

Tools that help

The 2026 Tax Prep Organizer printable has a page for each form type with checkboxes, so you know what's still missing. Side hustlers can also use our tax prep checklist for side hustlers.

Common questions

When do forms arrive? W-2s and most 1099s are due to you by early February. Some investment forms come later, so check before you file.

What if a form never shows up? Contact the payer first. For income without a form, use your own records; you still report it.

Do I need paper copies? No. Digital copies or PDFs from online accounts are fine. Keep them with your return.
