Tax Prep Checklist for Side Hustlers (2026 Taxes)
By Cedar & Ledger
If you earned money on the side in 2026, you will report it when you file in early 2027. Most of the stress comes from hunting for numbers at the last minute. This checklist lists what to gather, with example numbers, so you or your tax preparer can work from one organized folder.
This is general information, not tax advice. Rules depend on your situation and can change. Check with a qualified tax professional or the IRS for your own return. Every dollar figure below is a made-up example.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Income records for every platform and client
- ☐ Any 1099 forms you receive
- ☐ Business expenses, sorted by category
- ☐ Mileage log for business trips
- ☐ Home office details, if you use one
- ☐ Estimated tax payments you made in 2026
- ☐ Last year's return for reference
1. Gather all your side hustle income
List what each platform or client paid you in 2026, month by month. Do not rely only on tax forms; income should be reported even if no form arrives.
Example (made-up numbers): Etsy $2,400 + freelance design $1,800 + weekend pet sitting $600 = $4,800 gross income.
2. Collect your 1099 forms
Depending on how you were paid, you may receive forms such as 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC. They usually arrive in January or early February. Compare each one to your own income records and note any differences.
3. Total your business expenses
Sort costs into simple categories: supplies, platform and payment fees, shipping, software, advertising, phone or internet (business share only), and equipment.
Example (made-up numbers): supplies $600 + fees $350 + shipping $250 + software $120 = $1,320 expenses.
That makes example profit $4,800 − $1,320 = $3,480. Profit, not gross income, is usually what tax is figured on, which is why receipts matter.
4. Pull together your mileage log
If you drove for the business, you need dates, places, purpose and miles for each trip. A log kept during the year is much stronger than a guess in April.
Example (made-up numbers): 48 trips averaging 12 miles = 576 business miles. Use the IRS standard mileage rate for 2026 to turn miles into a dollar figure, or try our free mileage deduction calculator.
5. Note home office details
If you use part of your home only for the business, note the square footage of that space and of the whole home. Ask your preparer whether it qualifies.
6. List estimated tax payments
Write down the date and amount of any estimated payments you made for 2026, plus any state payments.
Example (made-up numbers): four payments of $200 = $800 paid during the year.
7. Put it in one folder
One folder, paper or digital, with: income summary, 1099s, expense totals by category, mileage log, home office notes, estimated payments and last year's return.
