Tax Filing Timeline for 2027: Key Dates for Your 2026 Return
By Cedar & Ledger
Filing your 2026 taxes goes smoother when you know what arrives when. Here's a simple month-by-month timeline for early 2027, so you can gather forms as they come and avoid a last-minute scramble.
This is general information, not tax advice. Dates can shift (weekends and holidays move deadlines, and the IRS announces the official filing-season start each year); check IRS.gov or ask a tax professional. Example numbers are made up.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Mid-January: make your Q4 estimated payment if you owe one
- ☐ Late January to mid-February: collect W-2s and 1099s as they arrive
- ☐ February: check every form against your own records
- ☐ March: file, or book time with a preparer
- ☐ By the April deadline: file, or file an extension and pay what you expect to owe
January 2027
- Around Jan 15: the fourth-quarter estimated tax payment for 2026 is usually due, if you're self-employed or have side income without withholding.
- Late January: the IRS usually opens filing season and starts accepting returns.
- By about Feb 1: employers generally must send W-2s, and many 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC forms are due to you. (Jan 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so the date usually moves to the next business day.)
February 2027
- More forms arrive: brokerage 1099s, 1099-K from payment apps, mortgage interest (1098) and student loan interest (1098-E).
- Check each form against your own records. A missing or wrong 1099 is easier to fix now than after you file.
- If you expect a refund and claim certain credits, refunds may not be released until late February.
March 2027
- Gather deduction records: donations, medical costs, home office, mileage.
- If you use a preparer, book early. Spring calendars fill up.
April 2027
- April 15, 2027 (a Thursday): the usual deadline to file your 2026 return and pay any tax owed. It's also the usual due date for your first 2027 estimated payment.
- Need more time? An extension (Form 4868) gives more time to file, usually to mid-October, but not more time to pay. Pay what you expect to owe by the April deadline to limit penalties and interest.

Common questions
When can I file? Usually once the IRS opens filing season in late January and you have all your forms.
What if a form never arrives? Contact the payer first. You still have to report the income even without the form.
Does an extension delay my payment? No. It only extends the time to file.
