1099 Forms Checklist: What to Expect in January 2027
By Cedar & Ledger
If you freelanced, sold online or had a side hustle in 2026, 1099 forms start arriving in January 2027. This checklist helps you list what to expect, match each form to your own records and spot anything missing.
This is general information, not tax advice. Rules and thresholds can change; check IRS.gov or a tax professional for your situation. Figures below are made-up examples.
Quick checklist
- ☐ List every client, platform and payment app that paid you in 2026
- ☐ Note which form each one might send
- ☐ Total your own records for each payer
- ☐ Compare each form with your total when it arrives
- ☐ Follow up on anything missing or wrong
- ☐ Report all income, even if no form comes
Step 1: List every payer
Go through your bank deposits and invoices for 2026. List each client, marketplace and payment app.
Step 2: Common forms
| Form | Usually for |
|---|---|
| 1099-NEC | Pay for freelance or contract work |
| 1099-K | Payments through card processors, marketplaces or payment apps, above the reporting threshold |
| 1099-MISC | Other income such as rents or prizes |
| 1099-INT | Bank interest |
Payers generally send many of these by early February. Check IRS.gov for the current dates and 1099-K threshold.
Step 3: Total your own records
For each payer, total what you were paid in 2026 from your own log. Your records are what you report; a form is a cross-check.
Example (made-up numbers): Client A invoices $3,200. Marketplace sales $1,450 gross, $190 fees.
Step 4: Compare when forms arrive
Match each form to your total. A 1099-K usually shows gross amounts before fees and refunds, so it may be higher than what reached your bank. Keep records of fees and refunds as expenses.
Step 5: Fix gaps
If a form looks wrong, contact the payer and ask for a corrected form. If no form comes, the income is still reportable.

Common questions
I earned a small amount. Do I still report it? Generally yes, income is reportable whether or not you get a form. Check IRS.gov for your situation.
Two forms for the same money? It can happen. Keep both and ask a tax professional how to handle it.
