Stocking Stuffer Budget: How Much to Spend per Stocking

By Cedar & Ledger

Stocking stuffers are small, so nobody plans them. Then ten "small" things a person, bought in five different stores, quietly become one of the biggest lines in the Christmas budget. This guide gives stockings their own number and a simple way to stay under it.

Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a recommendation of what to spend. This is general information, not financial advice.

Quick checklist

Step 1: Give stockings their own line

Take stockings out of the gift budget and write them down separately. If they live inside "gifts", each stocking item feels free because the big gift is the one you're watching. Start with one Christmas total first; How Much to Spend on Christmas per Child or Person shows how to work back from it.

Example (made-up numbers): Christmas total $600. Gifts $380, food $120, stockings $60, wrapping and extras $40.

Step 2: Set a cap per stocking and an item count

Divide the stocking line by the number of stockings, then pick how many items go in each. The item count matters as much as the cap: it stops "just one more" at the checkout.

Stockings Line Cap each Items each About per item
3 $60 $20 5 $4
4 $60 $15 4 $3.75
2 adults + 2 kids $60 $10 adults / $20 kids 3 / 5 $3–4

Different caps for kids and adults are fine. Write them down before anyone shops.

Step 3: Use a fill formula

A formula makes a full-looking stocking without buying filler:

  1. One treat: a favorite candy, snack or hot cocoa.
  2. One useful thing: socks, lip balm, a phone charger cable, batteries for the toys under the tree.
  3. One fun thing: a small game, puzzle, stickers or a card deck.
  4. One "main" item: the slightly better thing that sits at the top.
  5. An orange or a note if you want a fifth item for almost nothing.

Things you'd buy anyway (toothbrush, socks, batteries) can come out of the normal grocery or household budget only if they were already planned there. Otherwise count them here.

Step 4: Shop from one list

Write every stocking item on the same list as the gifts, with its cap. Buy in one or two planned trips. Grab-as-you-go in December is how a $15 stocking becomes $40. If you're shopping Black Friday, put stocking items on that list too: see the Black Friday budget plan.

Step 5: Log as you buy

Log each item, its price and which stocking it's for. When a stocking hits its cap, it's done.

Example (made-up numbers): Kid 1 stocking cap $20: candy $3, socks $4, card game $6, book $7 = $20. Done; the next cute thing goes back on the shelf.

Tools that help

The printable Christmas Planner & Budget 2026 ($5) has a budget page where stockings get their own line, plus a gift list with caps and a paid column (US Letter and A4). Prefer a spreadsheet? The Christmas Budget & Gift List Planner adds up each person's gifts and stocking items for you.

Common questions

How much do people spend on stocking stuffers? It varies a lot by family. The number that matters is the one that fits inside your total; pick it before you shop.

Should adults get stockings? Only if it fits the plan. A lower cap or fewer items for adults is common.

Can stockings replace some gifts? Yes. On a tight year, a fuller stocking and one smaller main gift can cost less than several mid-size gifts. See Christmas on a Tight Budget.

Wrapping soon? The holiday printables checklist covers gift tags, a holiday planner and a Black Friday list.
