Christmas Dinner Budget: Plan the Meal per Person (2026)
By Cedar & Ledger
Christmas dinner often costs more than planned because the extras (drinks, dessert, a second side, foil pans) never made it onto the list. This guide shows how to set a dinner budget per person, plan the menu around it and shop in two trips.
To turn the budget into a menu and grocery list, see how to plan a Christmas dinner menu.
Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a price quote. Grocery prices vary a lot by store and area. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Count guests, including kids
- ☐ Pick one total for the meal and divide by guests
- ☐ Write the menu with a cost next to each dish
- ☐ Check the pantry before you shop
- ☐ Shop non-perishables early and fresh food in the last few days
- ☐ Keep receipts and compare with the plan
Step 1: Total first, then per person
Example (made-up numbers): 10 guests, total $150, so $15 per person.
Step 2: Cost the menu
| Dish | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Main (ham) | $45 |
| Potatoes + gravy | $12 |
| Two vegetable sides | $16 |
| Rolls + butter | $8 |
| Dessert (2 pies) | $18 |
| Drinks | $25 |
| Foil pans, napkins | $10 |
| Total | $134 |
That leaves $16 of the $150 as a cushion.
Step 3: Ask guests to bring one thing
If guests offer, give each one a specific dish so nothing doubles up. Moving dessert and drinks to guests in the example saves $43.
Step 4: Shop in two trips
Buy canned goods, baking supplies and drinks one to two weeks out, and fresh produce and bread two or three days before. Use the per-dish numbers as your shopping list caps.
Step 5: Fit it into the holiday total
Dinner is part of the season's spending, not separate from it. How to Plan Holiday Spending and Still Cover January helps you check that the meal, gifts and travel all fit before the January bills.

Common questions
Is $15 per person reasonable? It depends on the menu, your area and store. Use your own receipts from last year if you have them.
Next step: once the budget is set, use the Christmas dinner timeline to plan what to do 4 weeks, 1 week and day-of.
