Side Hustle Budget: Tracking Your First $1,000
Your first $1,000 from a side hustle feels great until you realize you don't know how much of it was profit. A simple tracking habit from day one tells you whether the hustle is worth your time and keeps tax season calm.
Step 1: Separate the money
Open a free separate checking account (or at least a separate savings bucket) for side hustle money. Every payment in and every expense out goes through it. This alone makes tracking ten times easier. For how to pay yourself and log transfers between the two, see Separate Business and Personal Money for a Side Hustle.
Step 2: Log every sale and every cost
Keep one row per transaction: date, what it was, income or expense, amount, and category (materials, fees, shipping, ads, software, mileage).
| Date | Item | Income | Expense | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 3 | Etsy sale | $45 | sales | |
| Oct 3 | Etsy fees | $5.60 | fees | |
| Oct 5 | Supplies | $22 | materials |
Step 3: Know your profit, not just gross
Profit = income − expenses. If you made $1,000 in sales but spent $380 on supplies, fees, and shipping, your profit is $620. Profit is the number that matters for decisions and taxes.
Step 4: Set aside for taxes first
Move a percentage of each profit payment into a tax bucket right away. Many people start with 25–30% of profit. Check your own situation; this is not tax advice.
Step 5: Give the rest a job
A simple order for your first $1,000 of profit:
- Tax set-aside
- Reinvest a fixed slice (say 20%) in the hustle
- The rest to a goal: emergency fund, debt, or a planned treat
Step 6: Check your hourly rate
Divide monthly profit by hours worked. $620 over 40 hours is $15.50/hour. If that's too low, raise prices or cut the slowest tasks. Is Your Side Hustle Worth It? Work Out Profit per Hour compares two side hustles with example numbers.
A weekly 10-minute routine
Log the week's transactions, move the tax set-aside, and glance at profit to date. That's it.
If you want a spreadsheet for this: the Side Hustle Income & Expense Tracker ($7) logs income and expenses by stream with a tax set-aside line.
