How Much Hot Chocolate Per Person? Gallons for 6 to 50
A hot chocolate bar is one of the easiest ways to warm up a Christmas party, a cookie swap, a lights walk or a family New Year's Eve on Thursday, Dec 31, 2026. The tricky part is the amount: run out halfway through and the kids notice, make too much and you're pouring milk down the drain. Here's how much hot chocolate to plan per person, a gallons chart for 6 to 50 guests, how much mix and how many toppings to buy, and how to keep it hot and safe.
The quick answer
- One mug each (cocoa with dessert, or one of several drinks): plan one 8-oz cup per adult. That's the serving size on Swiss Miss canisters: 3 tablespoons of mix in 1 cup (8 fl oz) of hot milk or water.
- Kids: plan 6 oz per child. Hershey's own hot cocoa recipe counts a serving as 6 oz, and the classic "Amounts of Food to Serve Fifty" chart uses a 6-oz (3/4 cup) cup of cocoa.
- Cocoa is the main warm drink at a long party or an outdoor event (caroling, a lights walk, a bonfire): plan two 8-oz mugs per person, so 16 oz each. That's our planning assumption, not a measured average, so scale it to your crowd.
- The math: 1 gallon is 128 fl oz, so 1 gallon makes 16 eight-ounce mugs or about 21 six-ounce mugs.
For 50 people, the "Serve Fifty" chart plans 2 1/2 gallons of cocoa for 50 six-ounce servings. Pouring eggnog too? It goes in smaller half-cup glasses, so use the how much eggnog per person chart for that.
Hot chocolate chart by guests
Gallons are rounded up to the nearest half gallon. "Mugs" are 8-oz servings. Canisters are the 38.27-oz Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate canister (about 34 servings of 8 oz).
| Guests | 6 oz each (kid size) | One 8-oz mug each | Gallons, one mug each | Two mugs each | Gallons, two mugs each | 38.27-oz canisters, one mug / two mugs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 1/2 gallon | 6 | 1/2 gallon | 12 | 1 gallon | 1 / 1 |
| 8 | 1/2 gallon | 8 | 1/2 gallon | 16 | 1 gallon | 1 / 1 |
| 10 | 1/2 gallon | 10 | 1 gallon | 20 | 1 1/2 gallons | 1 / 1 |
| 12 | 1 gallon | 12 | 1 gallon | 24 | 1 1/2 gallons | 1 / 1 |
| 16 | 1 gallon | 16 | 1 gallon | 32 | 2 gallons | 1 / 1 |
| 20 | 1 gallon | 20 | 1 1/2 gallons | 40 | 2 1/2 gallons | 1 / 2 |
| 25 | 1 1/2 gallons | 25 | 2 gallons | 50 | 3 1/2 gallons | 1 / 2 |
| 30 | 1 1/2 gallons | 30 | 2 gallons | 60 | 4 gallons | 1 / 2 |
| 40 | 2 gallons | 40 | 2 1/2 gallons | 80 | 5 gallons | 2 / 3 |
| 50 | 2 1/2 gallons | 50 | 3 1/2 gallons | 100 | 6 1/2 gallons | 2 / 3 |
Mixed crowd? Add it up: 8 oz per adult plus 6 oz per child, then divide by 128 for gallons.
How much mix or cocoa to buy
Hot cocoa mix (Swiss Miss, as listed on grocery product pages in October 2026; check your label):
- 3 tablespoons of mix per 8-oz cup.
- Big-batch directions on the canister: 3/4 cup mix per quart (4 servings), 1 1/2 cups per 2 quarts (8), 2 1/4 cups per 3 quarts (12), and 3 cups of mix per gallon (16 servings).
- Canister sizes: 22.2 oz makes about 20 servings; 38.27 oz makes about 34.
- Milk makes it richer than water, so if you use milk, buy the same number of gallons of milk as the chart shows.
From scratch (Hershey's "Perfectly Chocolate" recipe): 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup Hershey's cocoa, a dash of salt, 1/3 cup hot water, 4 cups milk and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla make about six 6-oz servings. Four batches use a gallon of milk (16 cups) and make about 24 six-ounce servings. For 50 six-ounce cups, the "Serve Fifty" chart lists 8 oz of unsweetened cocoa powder, or 2 1/2 lb of instant cocoa mix.
Mug sizes change everything
Guests fill whatever mug you hand them. A big 12-oz mug filled to the top is 1 1/2 servings of mix and milk, so a gallon only fills about 10 of them (128 ÷ 12). Two quick fixes:
- Measure one mug. Pour water in from a measuring cup until it's where a guest would stop. Use that number in place of 8 oz.
- Use smaller cups for kids. A 6-oz paper cup or small mug is plenty, and a cup with a tight lid is safer for little ones (see safety below).
Toppings per person
Toppings go further than you'd think, because each mug only gets a spoonful. Package numbers below are from the labels as listed on grocery product pages in October 2026; the per-mug amounts are example numbers.
| Topping | What's in the package | Example: per mug | Mugs per package |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini marshmallows | 10-oz bag: about 9 servings of 2/3 cup, so about 6 cups | 1/4 cup | about 24 |
| Spray whipped cream | 6.5-oz can: about 37 servings of 2 tablespoons | 2 tablespoons | about 37 |
| Whipping cream (whip your own) | "Serve Fifty" chart: 1 1/2 pints of cream whip to about 1 1/2 quarts | 2 tablespoons whipped | about 50 |
| Crushed peppermint | Hershey's mint variation: 3 tablespoons crushed peppermint candy | 1/2 tablespoon | 6 per 3 tablespoons |
| Ground cinnamon | Hershey's cinnamon variation: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per 6-serving batch | a pinch | about 6 per 1/2 teaspoon |
Add one candy cane per guest if you want them as stirrers, and a jar of chocolate chips or sprinkles if the bar is the main event. Set out a little more than the math says for kids, who tend to load up on marshmallows.
Keep it hot and safe
- Make it on the stove, then hold it. Heat the cocoa on the stove until hot (Hershey's says not to boil it), then pour it into a preheated slow cooker or insulated drink dispenser. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service doesn't recommend using a slow cooker to reheat food, because food can stay too long in the "danger zone".
- Hold at 140°F or above. FoodSafety.gov says a slow cooker on "low" or "warm" keeps fully cooked food above 140°F as long as it stays plugged in. Check with a food thermometer and stir now and then.
- How much fits: a 6-quart slow cooker is rated for 6 quarts, which is 1 1/2 gallons. For a bigger crowd, keep a second pot warm on the stove and refill the cooker.
- Two-hour rule. Cocoa made with milk is perishable. If it isn't kept at 140°F or above, refrigerate it within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F). Store leftovers in shallow covered containers and reheat on the stove until steaming hot (165°F).
- Kids and hot drinks. The American Burn Association says young children's skin burns more quickly and deeply than adults'. Keep mugs and the cocoa pot away from table and counter edges, keep the slow cooker cord out of reach, and use lidded cups for small children.
Example: Christmas party for 16 (example numbers)
Saturday, Dec 19, 2026. 10 adults and 6 kids, cocoa with dessert, one mug each.
- Cocoa: 10 × 8 oz + 6 × 6 oz = 116 oz, just under 1 gallon. Make 1 gallon: 3 cups of mix stirred into 1 gallon of hot milk.
- Mix: one 22.2-oz canister (about 20 servings) covers it.
- Toppings: one 10-oz bag of mini marshmallows (about 24 mugs at 1/4 cup), one 6.5-oz can of whipped cream (about 37 squirts) and a box of candy canes.
- Setup: one slow cooker on "warm" with a ladle, mugs and toppings next to it, away from the table edge.
Example: lights walk and caroling for 30 (example numbers)
Sunday, Dec 20, 2026. Cocoa is the only warm drink, two mugs each.
- Cocoa: 60 mugs × 8 oz = 480 oz, about 3 3/4 gallons, so make 4 gallons.
- Mix: 3 cups per gallon, so 12 cups; two 38.27-oz canisters (about 68 servings) cover it.
- Holding: a 6-quart slow cooker holds 1 1/2 gallons, so use two cookers, or one cooker plus a pot on the stove for refills. Take lidded travel cups for the walk.
- Toppings: 3 bags of mini marshmallows and 2 cans of whipped cream.
