Christmas Movie Night Ideas for Families and Friends
By Cedar & Ledger
A Christmas movie night is the cheapest holiday party there is. You need a screen, blankets, snacks and a plan. Here is how to make it feel like an event instead of just another night on the couch.
Plan the basics
- Pick the format. One film for a family night, two or three for a marathon, or a weekly movie night through December.
- Set a start and end time. For kids, start early and pick shorter films.
- Choose movies everyone can watch. Check ratings and running times ahead of time.
- Budget. Snacks and cocoa for 8 people usually cost $15 to $30.
Make it cozy
- Build a blanket fort or a "nest" of pillows and sleeping bags
- Pajamas required, with a Best Pajamas award
- String lights on and the main lights off
- Paper tickets at the door for kids
Snack ideas
- Popcorn bar with toppings (cinnamon sugar, M&Ms, caramel drizzle, parmesan)
- Hot cocoa bar with marshmallows, candy canes and whipped cream
- Christmas cookies or a cookie plate guests bring
- Pizza or sliders for marathons
- Ask guests to sign up for one snack each
Games during the movie
- Christmas movie bingo: mark squares for things like "snow falls," "someone says 'Santa'," or "a sweater appears"
- Quote quiz between films
- Rate each movie from 1 to 5 stars and crown a family favorite
- Predict the ending for films the kids have not seen
Awards for the end of the night
- Movie Night MVP
- Best Pajamas
- Best Snack Maker
- Biggest Crier
- Best Quote Recall
- Coziest Blanket Fort
A marathon schedule example
- 4:00 Snacks and fort building
- 4:30 Movie 1 (shortest, for the youngest)
- 6:00 Pizza break and a quote quiz
- 6:45 Movie 2
- 8:30 Cocoa bar, ratings and awards
