December Bills Calendar: Plan Holiday Bills by Payday
By Cedar & Ledger
December is the month regular bills get lost behind gifts and travel. Rent and the car payment don't move, but the money for them gets spent first. A one-page December calendar keeps the must-pays visible and shows you what's really left for the holidays.
All dates and amounts below are made-up examples. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ List every December bill with its due date
- ☐ Mark your December paydays (and early or late paydays around holidays)
- ☐ Assign each bill to the paycheck before it
- ☐ Add the "extra" December bills: yearly renewals, holiday travel, gifts
- ☐ Check that January 1 bills are covered by a December paycheck
Step 1: List every December bill
Rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, internet, insurance, car payment, card minimums, loans, subscriptions. Your bank and card statements from November catch the ones you forget.
Step 2: Mark your paydays
In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday and New Year's Day is the next Friday. If you're paid on a Friday, ask whether your payday moves earlier. Direct deposit often arrives the business day before a bank holiday, but don't assume it.
Step 3: Give each bill to a paycheck
Put each bill under the payday before its due date.
| (Made-up example) | Pay Dec 4: $1,300 | Pay Dec 18: $1,300 |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, due Dec 1 | (paid from Nov 20 check) | |
| Car payment, due Dec 10 | $310 | |
| Phone + internet, due Dec 12 | $140 | |
| Electric, due Dec 15 | $95 | |
| Card minimum, due Dec 22 | $60 | |
| Groceries and gas | $350 | $350 |
| Rent, due Jan 1 | $1,050 | |
| Left over | $405 | −$160 |
The second check comes up $160 short because January rent is due before the next payday. Fix it now: move $160+ from the first check, so holiday spending comes out of the $405, not the rent.
Step 4: Add December's extra bills
Yearly renewals (streaming, warehouse club, software), holiday travel, party costs and gifts go on the same calendar. If a renewal surprises you every year, see How to Track Yearly Subscriptions.
Step 5: Check January 1
Rent, mortgage and many loans are due January 1, right after the most expensive weeks of the year. Our plan holiday spending and still cover January guide covers that stretch.
Tools that help
The Bill Tracker spreadsheet lists every bill with due dates and paid checkboxes. For next year, the printable 2027 Bill Payment Calendar has a page per month with your paydays written in. More detail on the method: How to Make a Bill Payment Calendar.
Common questions
What if a paycheck can't cover its bills? Move a bill to the earlier check, ask the company for a new due date, or plan a smaller holiday total. Calling before the due date often goes better than after.
Should I pay bills early in December? It can help if money is there now and you might spend it otherwise. Keep enough for groceries and gas.
Does autopay solve this? Autopay pays on time, but it still needs money in the account. Check it against the calendar.
