Classroom Holiday Party Ideas: A Room Parent's Plan
By Cedar & Ledger
Being room parent for the winter party usually means 25 kids, about 60 minutes and a small budget, often collected from families. Here is a simple plan that works for any grade.
Before you start: check with the teacher
- Date, time and length. Most parties run 45 to 60 minutes.
- School rules. Many schools require store-bought snacks with labels, and some ban food entirely. Ask about allergies before planning anything edible.
- Inclusive theme. Many classrooms use a "winter" or "holiday" theme so every family feels welcome.
- Volunteers. Three or four adults is plenty.
A 60-minute schedule
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0–10 min | Welcome, hand washing, a coloring sheet at desks |
| 10–25 min | Game 1 (whole class) |
| 25–40 min | Craft station or rotating stations |
| 40–50 min | Snack |
| 50–60 min | Game 2, clean-up, take-home bags |
Easy games (no prep or low prep)
- Winter bingo. Print cards, use cereal as markers.
- Snowman stack. Teams stack cups into a snowman shape.
- Freeze dance to holiday or winter songs.
- Pass the present. One wrapped prize, many layers, each with a joke.
- Would you rather cards read aloud; kids move to a side of the room.
- Pin the nose on the snowman, blindfold optional.
- Classroom scavenger hunt with picture clues for younger grades.
Cheap craft ideas
- Paper snowflakes (scissors and copy paper).
- Paper plate snowmen or wreaths.
- Pinecone ornaments with yarn.
- Popsicle-stick snowflakes.
Snack ideas (check the school policy first)
- Clementines with a drawn-on face.
- Pretzel sticks and cheese cubes (if allowed).
- Store-bought cookies with a sealed label.
- Water bottles instead of juice to cut sugar and spills.
Budget for a class of 25
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Snacks and drinks | $20–$35 |
| Craft supplies | $10–$20 |
| Game prizes or small favors | $15–$25 |
| Plates, napkins, wipes | $8–$12 |
| Total | $55–$90 |
Splitting $75 across 25 families is $3 each. Keep a simple log of who paid and save receipts so you can show where the money went.
