Hanukkah Budget 2026: Plan Eight Nights of Gifts
By Cedar & Ledger
Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. Eight nights can add up quickly, so it helps to set one total first and split it by night and by person. Please check a Jewish calendar for exact candle-lighting times where you live.
Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a typical or recommended amount. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Pick one total for all eight nights
- ☐ Decide which nights get gifts and which get something else
- ☐ Set a cap per person
- ☐ Budget candles, food and any party separately
- ☐ Track what you spend each night
Step 1: Pick one total
Start with the cash you can spend without borrowing, then work down to nights and people. Fitting the plan to your total is easier than adding up a wish list and hoping it fits.
Step 2: Not every night needs a big gift
Many families mix it up: a main gift one night, small gifts on others, and some nights for a book, a family outing, a donation or homemade latkes. Plan this ahead so the total stays put.
Example (made-up numbers), for one child:
| Nights | What | Example cost each | Example total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 night | Main gift | $45 | $45 |
| 3 nights | Small gift | $15 | $45 |
| 4 nights | Book, outing, cooking night | $8 | $32 |
| 8 nights | $122 |
Step 3: Add the extras
Candles, oil, potatoes, sufganiyot, gelt and a party for friends can be their own line. Example: candles $8 + food for a latke night $35 + gelt and dreidels $12 = $55. With the $122 above, that is $177 for one child and the home extras.
Step 4: Track as you go
Write each gift, the night and what it cost. Christmas Gift List: Track Gifts and Spending uses the same columns (cap, bought, paid) and works for any holiday list. How to Set a Christmas Gift Budget per Person (the same method works for any holiday) helps set caps.
Tools that help
The Christmas Budget & Holiday Gift List Planner spreadsheet adds up every gift against one total; rename the tabs for Hanukkah. A printable Hanukkah Planner & Gift Budget 2026 ($4) has a dated eight-nights plan, gift list, food, party and candle-lighting pages. The printable Holiday Printables Bundle includes gift tags and lists.
Common questions
Do I have to give a gift every night? No. Plenty of families give gifts on some nights and do activities on others.
What if Hanukkah and Christmas are both in the house? Give each holiday its own line under one December total, so neither eats the other.
