How to Host a Hanukkah Party: Simple Plan and Timeline
By Cedar & Ledger
A Hanukkah party can be small and simple: candles, latkes, a few games and the people you like. Here is a plan for the guest list, the menu, the gifts and the night itself, with a timeline that starts two weeks out. In 2026, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4.

Quick checklist
- ☐ Pick which night (or nights) to host
- ☐ Set a total budget before shopping
- ☐ Plan a short menu built around latkes
- ☐ Decide on a gift rule for guests
- ☐ Have candles, matches and dreidels ready
Step 1: Pick the night and guest count (2 weeks out)
Choose one of the eight nights. A weekend night gives you more time to cook. Write down the guest count first; it decides the food and the cost.
Step 2: Set a budget
Example (made-up numbers): latke ingredients $20 + toppings (applesauce, sour cream) $10 + a main and a side $35 + sufganiyot or other dessert $15 + candles and gelt $10 = $90 for 10 guests, or $9 per person. Change the lines to your own prices.
Step 3: Plan the menu (1 week out)
Keep it to a few things you can make well: latkes with two toppings, one main, one salad, and something sweet. Latkes can be fried earlier in the day and reheated in a hot oven on a rack. Ask guests to bring a side or dessert if you want to share the work.
Step 4: Choose a gift rule
Gifts at a party get expensive fast. Pick one rule and put it in the invitation: no gifts, gifts for kids only, or a small swap with a price limit. Example: a $10 limit swap where everyone brings one wrapped gift.
Step 5: Set up the night
Put the menorah where everyone can see it, away from curtains, and never leave it burning unattended. Have dreidels and gelt on the table for kids and adults. Light candles first, then eat.
Step 6: After the party
Write down what you made, how much was left and what it cost. Next year's plan is then mostly done.

Common questions
How many latkes per person? Plan on 3 to 4 per adult if there are other dishes, more if latkes are the main event.
Can I make latkes ahead? Yes. Fry them, cool them on a rack, and reheat in a hot oven so they stay crisp.
