Christmas Decoration Storage Ideas and Take-Down Checklist
By Cedar & Ledger
The best time to make next year easier is the day you take the tree down. These ideas help you pack decorations so they come out safe, sorted and easy to find, and so you stop buying duplicates.
Quick take-down checklist
- ☐ Photograph each room and the tree before anything comes down
- ☐ Sort into keep, fix, donate and toss piles
- ☐ Test light strands and tag any that need replacing
- ☐ Pack one box per room or theme, with a numbered label
- ☐ Write each box number and what is in it on one master list
- ☐ Note what to buy after-season (and what you already have plenty of)
Storage ideas that work
- Number every box. A numbered box plus a master list beats writing a long list on each lid.
- Clear bins for the top layer. Put the first-out items (tree skirt, topper, stockings) in a clear bin so you see them right away.
- Egg cartons and cups for small ornaments. Paper cups glued into a box lid or cardboard dividers keep glass ornaments apart.
- Wrap lights around cardboard. Cut a notch in a piece of stiff cardboard, tuck the plug in, and wind. Label which tree or window they go on.
- Wreaths in a flat bag or box, hung up. Store them flat or on a hook so they keep their shape.
- A "first night" box. Extension cords, hooks, timers, spare bulbs, scissors and tape in one box you open first.
- Keep it cool and dry. Avoid a hot attic for candles and anything with glue; a closet shelf or basement shelf is safer.
Track what you have and what you spend
Write down what each box holds, what broke, and what you plan to replace. Add a small decor budget so you only buy after-season deals you actually need.
