Free Moving Out Calculator: How Much to Save Before You Move
Moving out costs a lot more than the first month's rent. Enter the rent and what you expect to spend to move in, and see the total to have saved and how much to put away each month until moving day.
It runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. The numbers filled in below are a made-up example; change them to yours.
How the math works
- Up-front costs = first month's rent + deposit + fees + moving + furniture + utility setup.
- Cushion = months × (rent + living costs), so a late paycheck or surprise bill in the first month doesn't put you behind.
- Monthly savings = (total − already saved) ÷ months until you move.
- Some places also ask for last month's rent or a pet deposit up front; add those to the deposit.
Example (made up): $1,000 rent, a $1,000 deposit, $75 in fees, $150 for a truck, $800 for furniture and $100 for utility setup, plus a 1-month cushion of $1,900. Total: $5,025. With $1,500 saved and 6 months to go, that's about $587.50 a month.
This is an estimate for planning, not financial advice.
