Food-safety basics
Follow current food-safety guidance from official sources such as USDA or FoodSafety.gov. In general they advise refrigerating leftovers within 2 hours, eating refrigerated leftovers within 3 to 4 days, and reheating to 165°F. When in doubt, throw it out.
Plan the leftovers before you shop
The cheapest leftover is the one you planned for. When you write your Thanksgiving grocery list, add the few extras that turn leftovers into meals (rice, tortillas, broth, a pie crust) so you don't need another store run. Our Thanksgiving Planner 2026 has a menu, grocery list and budget page, and a free Thanksgiving dinner budget sheet helps you set a number first.
