Holiday Packing List for Families (Printable Checklist)
By Cedar & Ledger
Holiday trips are short, busy and full of extras: gifts, party clothes, cold-weather gear. This checklist is grouped by person and by bag so nothing gets left on the bed. Pack in this order and you only have to think once.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Make one list per person, plus one shared "house" list
- ☐ Check the forecast and the plans (church, parties, outdoor days)
- ☐ Pack gifts and fragile items last, on top
- ☐ Keep medicines, chargers and documents in a carry-on
- ☐ Do a final walk-through with the "before you leave home" list
For each adult
- ☐ Outfits for each day, plus one spare
- ☐ One dressier outfit for a holiday meal or party
- ☐ Sleepwear, underwear and socks (one extra pair per day in winter)
- ☐ Warm layers: coat, hat, gloves, scarf
- ☐ Comfortable shoes and one pair of nicer shoes
- ☐ Toiletries, glasses or contacts, prescriptions
- ☐ Phone, charger, ID and payment card
For each child
- ☐ Outfits for each day, plus two spares (spills happen)
- ☐ Pajamas and a comfort item for sleeping somewhere new
- ☐ Snow or rain gear if the forecast calls for it
- ☐ Small quiet activities for the trip and for adult meals
- ☐ Snacks and a refillable water bottle
- ☐ Diapers, wipes and a change of clothes in the carry bag (little ones)
Shared bag
- ☐ Gifts, wrapping supplies and tape
- ☐ A hosting gift for the people you stay with
- ☐ First-aid basics, pain reliever, thermometer
- ☐ Power strip and spare charging cables
- ☐ Laundry bag for dirty clothes
- ☐ Car kit if driving: blanket, scraper, flashlight, phone charger
Before you leave home
- ☐ Adjust the thermostat and unplug small appliances
- ☐ Take out trash and clear the fridge of things that will spoil
- ☐ Pause or hold deliveries, or ask a neighbor to grab packages
- ☐ Leave notes for anyone caring for your pets, plants or home
- ☐ Lock doors and windows; set lights on timers
Tips that save time
- Lay it out first. Put each person's pile on the bed and check it against their list before anything goes in a bag.
- Roll outfits by day. Kids can grab "Tuesday" without unpacking everything.
- Leave room for the trip home. Gifts you receive need space too, so pack one bag only three-quarters full.

Do I need a template to do this?
No. A notebook or a sheet you build yourself works fine. Cedar & Ledger also sells spreadsheet templates (I'd earn from a purchase); see the template box at the top of this page.
Is this financial advice?
No. It's general information with example numbers only, not financial, tax, legal or medical advice. Use your own numbers and check anything important with a qualified professional or the official source.
