Christmas Cookie Baking Schedule: What to Bake When

Baking every cookie in the last weekend before Christmas is how kitchens fall apart. A simple schedule spreads the work over December: freeze what keeps, bake the delicate ones last, and buy ingredients once.

Labeling the cookie swap? The Christmas Cookie Exchange Labels & Tags printable – $3 has 24 tin and box labels, 16 hang tags with a "contains" checklist, 12 swap-table name cards and 8 recipe share cards. Print at home (Letter + A4).

Step 1: List your cookies and how many you need

Count gift boxes, parties and the cookie exchange. A dozen per gift box and 2–3 per guest at a party are common starting points. See How Many Cookies to Bake for Christmas for the math.

Step 2: Sort cookies by how well they keep

Group Examples When to make
Freezes well as dough Chocolate chip, sugar cookie dough, shortbread logs Early December, bake later
Freezes well baked Gingersnaps, unfrosted sugar cookies, biscotti 2–3 weeks out
Keeps about a week Snickerdoodles, molasses, peanut butter 5–7 days before
Best fresh Meringues, iced or filled cookies, anything with cream 1–2 days before

Keeping times vary by recipe and container; airtight tins help.

Step 3: Turn cookies into batches and oven hours

Batches = cookies needed ÷ cookies per recipe, rounded up. Oven time = batches × trays per batch × minutes per tray. Six batches at 3 trays of 12 minutes is about 3.6 hours of oven time, before preheating.

Step 4: Put it on a calendar

Example for a Dec 20 give date:

Keep each day under the oven hours you really have.

Step 5: One shopping list

Add up the flour, butter, sugar and eggs across every recipe and buy once, minus what's already in the pantry. Butter and chocolate often go on sale in early December.

Common questions

How early can I bake Christmas cookies? Many sturdy cookies freeze for 2–3 months; most fresh ones are best within a week.

Should I freeze dough or baked cookies? Dough usually tastes fresher; baked cookies save more time in the final week.

Plan your Christmas baking: the Christmas Baking Schedule & Cookie Batch Calculator ($5, Excel + Google Sheets) works out batches, oven time, a December bake calendar and a combined shopping list. Or get all three holiday spreadsheets in the Holiday Spreadsheet Bundle ($12, save $3).
