Christmas Cookie Exchange: Plan and Budget the Baking
By Cedar & Ledger
A cookie exchange lets everyone go home with many kinds of cookies after baking just one. It stays cheap if you set the batch size, pick a recipe that fits it and price the ingredients before you shop.
Every dollar figure here is a made-up example to show the math, not a typical or recommended amount. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Set the guest count and how many cookies each person brings
- ☐ Pick one recipe that scales easily
- ☐ Price the ingredients from your pantry first
- ☐ Budget containers and labels
- ☐ Host: plan drinks and a table, not a full meal
Step 1: Do the cookie math
Each person brings enough for everyone to take some home. Example: 8 guests, each taking home 6 of each kind, means each baker brings 8 × 6 = 48 cookies, which is 4 dozen.
Step 2: Pick a recipe that fits
Drop cookies and bars scale more easily than cut-outs that need decorating. Check how many a recipe makes and multiply.
Step 3: Price it before you shop
Use what is already in the pantry first. Example (made-up numbers):
| Item | Example cost |
|---|---|
| Butter | $9 |
| Sugar, flour, eggs (partly from pantry) | $6 |
| Chocolate chips | $4 |
| Containers and labels | $5 |
| Example total for 48 cookies | $24 |
$24 ÷ 48 = $0.50 per cookie in this example.
Step 4: If you host
Keep it simple: coffee, cocoa, a table and boxes to carry cookies home. Example: drinks $15 + takeout boxes $8 = $23. Add it to your holiday hosting budget.
Step 5: Fit it into December
The exchange belongs in your holiday total along with gifts and food. Christmas on a Tight Budget shows how to rank what matters.
Tools that help
The printable Christmas Planner & Budget 2026 ($5) has pages for events, a baking and food list and a budget. The printable Holiday Printables Bundle adds gift tags for labeling cookie boxes. A printable Christmas Cookie Exchange & Baking Planner ($4) has a sign-up sheet, recipe cards and allergen labels.
Common questions
What about allergies? Ask everyone to bring a card with the recipe name and main allergens.
Can I bring store-bought? Ask the host. Many groups are happy with it as long as people bring the agreed number.
