Budget for Couples: Set Up a 2027 Plan Together
By Cedar & Ledger
January is a good time for a money talk with your partner. A shared plan doesn't mean merging everything; it means agreeing on how bills get paid and what you're saving for.
All amounts below are made-up examples. This is general information, not financial advice.
Quick checklist
- ☐ Share incomes, bills and debts openly
- ☐ Pick a setup: joint, separate or a mix
- ☐ Agree how shared bills get split
- ☐ Set one or two shared goals for 2027
- ☐ Pick a short monthly money check-in
Step 1: Pick a setup
- All joint: both paychecks go into one account. Simple to track.
- Separate: each pays agreed bills from their own account.
- Mix: a joint account for shared bills and goals, plus personal spending money each.
There's no single right choice. Pick what feels fair to both of you.
Step 2: Split shared bills
| (Made-up example) | Partner A | Partner B | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take-home pay | $3,000 | $2,000 | $5,000 |
| Share of income | 60% | 40% | |
| Shared bills ($3,000) | $1,800 | $1,200 | $3,000 |
Splitting by share of income is one common way when pay is uneven. A 50/50 split also works when pay is similar.
Step 3: Keep personal money
Give each person an amount to spend without asking. It prevents small arguments.
Step 4: Check in monthly
Set 20 minutes a month to review bills, goals and anything coming up. Keep it short and blame-free.
Tools that help
The 2027 Budget Planner spreadsheet has room for both incomes and shared bills. Our monthly money check-in guide gives a simple agenda.
Common questions
Should we combine accounts? Some couples do, some don't. Agreeing on how bills get paid matters more than the setup.
What about debt from before we met? Many couples keep it with the person who brought it in but agree on a payoff plan together.
How do we handle different spending styles? Personal spending money each, plus agreed limits for big purchases (for example, talk first above $200).
