2027 Sinking Funds List: Categories and Monthly Amounts
By Cedar & Ledger
A sinking fund is money you set aside a little at a time for a cost you already know is coming. Starting in January 2027 gives you 12 months to spread out bills that usually land all at once.
Any dollar figures here are made-up examples, not recommendations. This is general information, not financial advice.
Common sinking fund categories
- Car: registration, insurance (if paid every 6 or 12 months), oil changes, tires and repairs
- Home: renters or home insurance, small repairs, appliance replacement
- Health: copays, dental cleanings, glasses or contacts
- Holidays and gifts: December gifts, birthdays, hosting
- Kids: back-to-school, activities, camps
- Subscriptions billed yearly: memberships, software, warehouse clubs
- Travel: a summer trip or visits home
- Pets: vet checkups and food in bulk
Pick only the ones that apply to you. Five to eight funds is plenty for most households.
Ready to track them? Here is how to make a sinking funds spreadsheet that works out each monthly amount.
Work out the monthly amount
Divide each yearly cost by the months you have before it is due.
| Fund (example) | 2027 total | Due | Months to save | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car registration | $180 | June | 6 (Jan–Jun) | $30 |
| Holiday gifts | $600 | December | 12 | $50 |
| Dental cleanings | $240 | April and October | 12 | $20 |
| Yearly subscriptions | $120 | Various | 12 | $10 |
| Total | $1,140 | $110 |
If you are paid every two weeks, multiply the monthly total by 12 and divide by 26 to get a per-paycheck number ($110 × 12 ÷ 26 ≈ $51 in this example). The 2027 paycheck calendar guide shows which months have a third paycheck you could use to catch up.
Where to keep the money
One savings account with a written list of balances works fine. Some banks let you make named "buckets" inside one account. Whatever you choose, write down each fund's balance every month so you can see what is really there.
When a fund runs short
Move money from a less urgent fund, cover the gap from the next paycheck, and raise that fund's monthly amount for next year. How to Build a 12-Month Budget With Yearly Bills helps you spot the tight months ahead of time, and Sinking Funds: How to Budget for the Holidays covers starting late.
A printable, if you want one
Paper and a pen work. If you'd like it laid out, the 2027 Sinking Funds Planner Printable has a fund list, monthly trackers and a fill-in balance chart for each fund. It's part of the 2027 Printable Money Pack too. We'd earn from a purchase.
