2027 52-Week Savings Challenge: Dated Chart and Totals

By Cedar & Ledger

The 52-week savings challenge is simple: save $1 in week 1, $2 in week 2, and keep adding a dollar each week until you save $52 in week 52. By the end of the year you have $1,378. Here's how it lines up with the 2027 calendar, plus a few versions that fit different budgets.

Dollar amounts here show how the challenge adds up; they aren't recommendations. This is general information, not financial advice.

How the 2027 weeks line up

January 1, 2027 is a Friday. If you count each challenge week from a Friday, week 1 starts Jan 1 and week 52 starts Dec 24, so the challenge ends right on Dec 31. Here is what each month asks for on the classic plan:

Month Weeks Saved that month Running total
January 1–5 (5 weeks) $15 $15
February 6–9 (4 weeks) $30 $45
March 10–13 (4 weeks) $46 $91
April 14–18 (5 weeks) $80 $171
May 19–22 (4 weeks) $82 $253
June 23–26 (4 weeks) $98 $351
July 27–31 (5 weeks) $145 $496
August 32–35 (4 weeks) $134 $630
September 36–39 (4 weeks) $150 $780
October 40–44 (5 weeks) $210 $990
November 45–48 (4 weeks) $186 $1,176
December 49–52 (4 weeks) $202 $1,378

Notice the catch: the classic plan asks for the most money in October through December, right when holiday spending peaks.

Aiming higher than $1,378? Here is how to save $5,000 in a year with an example plan.

The reverse challenge

Flip it. Save $52 in week 1 and $1 less each week, ending with $1 on Christmas Eve week. The total is the same $1,378, but the big weeks land early: January asks for $250, while November is $26 and December just $10. If your January is calm, the reverse plan is usually easier to finish.

A version for biweekly pay

If you're paid every two weeks, a 26-paycheck ladder may fit better than weekly deposits:

Biweekly pay gives 26 paychecks in 2027. The 2027 paycheck calendar guide shows which months get a third check, which is a good time for a bigger step.

Color-in grids for a round goal

Want a bigger target? The 100 envelope challenge saves $5,050; here is what it really costs per week and smaller versions.

Some people prefer a grid of 100 boxes: $10 each for $1,000, or $50 each for $5,000. Color in a box whenever you move that amount to savings, in any order. It works well with irregular income, because there's no fixed weekly amount.

Tips that help people finish

  1. Use a separate savings account, ideally one you don't see in your everyday banking app.
  2. Set an automatic transfer each payday, then check off the boxes afterward.
  3. Missed a week? Don't restart. Double up later or pick any unchecked amount; the total stays the same.
  4. Decide the money's job now: an emergency fund, holiday sinking fund or a yearly bill. A named goal is easier to keep going for.
  5. Check it monthly against the running totals above. The free emergency fund calculator can help you pick a bigger target for 2028.

Prefer a shorter sprint first? Try a 90-day winter arc money challenge and roll the habit into the 52 weeks.

A printable, if you want one

Paper and a pen work fine. If you'd like a ready-made, dated chart, Cedar & Ledger has a free 2027 52-week savings challenge printable (3 pages; it's $0 on Payhip, which may ask for your email to send it). The $5 2027 Savings Challenge Set adds the reverse, 26-paycheck and $1,000/$5,000 grid versions plus a savings log, and the Sinking Funds & Savings Goals Tracker tracks several goals in a spreadsheet. Both are optional, and we'd earn from a purchase.
