How the math works
- Total spent = everything everyone paid.
- Each person's share = total × their weight ÷ the sum of all weights. With every weight at 1, it's an even split.
- Balance = what they paid minus their share. Positive means they're owed money; negative means they owe.
- Payments are matched so balances settle with the fewest transfers (exact for up to 15 people). Amounts are rounded to the cent.
Hosting? Plan the whole dinner in one spreadsheet
The Thanksgiving Hosting Planner 2026 ($7, Excel & Google Sheets) has a guest list with who's bringing what, a menu planner, a cooking timeline, a shopping list and a budget. Coming to the shop on November 1.
We make this planner, so take that into account. The calculator above is free to use either way.
Questions
How does the Friendsgiving cost split work?
Enter each person and what they spent on food, drinks or supplies. The calculator adds it up, works out an equal share per person and shows who should pay whom to even things out.
How does it keep the number of payments low?
It looks for groups of people whose balances cancel out exactly and settles each group on its own, which gives the fewest possible transfers for up to 15 people. For bigger groups it uses a quick method that matches the largest amounts first, which is usually close to the fewest.
What if someone brought a dish instead of paying?
Enter what that dish cost them as their spend. If you'd rather not count homemade dishes, leave it at 0 and they'll simply pay their share.
Can someone pay a smaller share?
Yes. Change the share weight. A weight of 0.5 pays half a share, 2 pays a double share (for a couple splitting as one, for example), and 0 pays nothing.
Is my data saved?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere. Reloading the page clears it.
